After more than a decade of development, Squadron 42 now looks a lot more like a game you can actually buy. Cloud Imperium Games has put its single-player Star Citizen campaign up on Steam, complete with system requirements, a Q2 2027 release window and a new trailer called "The Oath."

What was announced

The new Steam page describes Squadron 42 as a "cinematic, single-player space adventure" in which you enlist in the UEE Navy, pilot combat ships, fight on foot and explore capital ships, space stations and frontier outposts alongside your crew.

The trailer leans into the military side of the story and its big-name cast. PC Gamer notes appearances from Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman and Rhona Mitra, and the game also features Gillian Anderson and Henry Cavill. Squadron 42 was previously pushed back again, with Cloud Imperium founder Chris Roberts saying the studio wanted to avoid "the attention buzz saw of GTA 6."

Why it matters

Squadron 42 has become one of the most famous long-running projects in games, funded alongside Star Citizen by a crowdfunding campaign that has run for years. A Steam listing with a release window and requirements is the most concrete sign yet that the campaign is heading toward launch.

As PC Gamer notes, the requirements are fairly old-fashioned, with no ray tracing-capable GPU listed, while the 150GB install is still very large.

What it means for developers

  • Your Steam page is a marketing milestone. Even for a game this famous, a store page with requirements, screenshots and a date range generates a wave of coverage. For indies, putting the page up early and gathering wishlists is still the single most useful step.
  • Release windows beat exact dates. "Q2 2027" gives Cloud Imperium room to move without another public delay. It's a smart approach for any small team that isn't fully sure of its schedule.
  • Plan around the giants. Moving a launch away from a mega-release like GTA 6 is a deliberate choice. Check what's launching near your date before you commit to it.
  • Install size and specs are part of the pitch. Clear, honest system requirements help players decide early and reduce refund requests at launch.
