EA Plans a Wing Commander III 30th Anniversary Edition With Remastered FMVs
EA is reportedly preparing a 30th anniversary release of Wing Commander III with restored full-motion video, 60fps gameplay and controller support. No official announcement yet.
Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger is getting another look, and this time it could come with a shiny new coat of paint. According to a talk at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, EA is working on a 30th anniversary edition of the 1994 space sim that would include remastered full-motion video.
EA senior producer Jim Vessella described how the team has been restoring the original source tapes from the company's video archive. The planned release reportedly bundles the Kilrathi Saga integration, upscaled video, 60fps gameplay, controller support and the Community Enhancement Patch. It is said to be headed to Steam, GOG and the EA app.
What is still unconfirmed
EA has not made an official announcement, so the details above come from what was shared at the expo. Still, the game was an early series entry to use polygonal graphics and FMV cutscenes, and the story it became known for makes a remaster of its video a strong draw for longtime fans of the franchise.
For developers, it is a reminder that old games still have a dedicated audience, and that publishers are digging into their archives for remasters. If EA confirms the release, it could be worth watching how the community patch and official work fit together.
